7 Signs Your Job Is Holding You Back
No matter what age you are, chances are you work for someone else at least part of the time to help make ends meet. But is your job preventing you from reaching your full potential? Here are some warning signs:
1. You come home tired.
If you’re coming home exhausted from your job, chances are it’s causing you to neglect yourself. If you feel “too tired” to go to the gym or “too tired” to work on your personal projects, doesn’t that mean you’re “too tired” to live your own life?
2. There’s no advancement in sight.
Do you dream of living out the rest of your days doing exactly what you did today, over and over? If you’re in a dead-end job, that’s what you might end up doing. Sure, you may “want” to quit it and do something else “once you’ve saved enough,” but a job with no potential for advancement is not going to make that dream a reality.
3. You slack off at work.
Whether you like it or not, work is a big part of your life. So why not like it? If you’re doing a job you don’t like doing – something that makes you try to find something else do instead – something’s wrong. Probably the job.
4. You’re afraid of the boss.
Lumbergh breathing down your neck? Wants those TPS reports by a week ago yesterday? If your boss is your enemy, then one thing is sure: you aren’t on your company’s side. You don’t share the dreams and aspirations of management and they don’t share yours either.
5. Sleeping in is an attractive option every morning.
It’s been said that you become an adult when you’d rather sleep than be awake. That’s possibly the most depressing statement I’ve ever heard. Why should growing up mean you want to be unconscious? If you don’t look forward to the things you do practically every day of your life … then it’s hardly worth living.
6. You can’t be yourself there.
Does it feel like you wear a costume to work? Does a suit jacket, high heels, a tie make you feel like someone else? News flash: that sucks. Shouldn’t you be able to be one person all the time? Someone you like? Someone who does things because they want to?
7. Work feels bad.
I’m at home, listening to Blues Traveler as loud as I like as they wail an awesome solo, and it’s got me thinking I’d love to play some rocking air guitar to Rush as soon as this song is over. I’m in a comfortable chair in a comfortable room. If I get bored, I can stop working for a bit until I’m ready again. I don’t find myself falling asleep at the desk, and if I want a nap I can take it. I sleep better on my own schedule, and I work better too. I eat when I’m hungry, not when someone tells me I can. I feel good. In fact, I feel great.
You deserve the same. If your job is holding you back, why not do something about it?
