The Power of Nutrition

It’s now 4:30 in the morning, and I’m utterly unable to go to sleep. For a while I attributed this “problem” to an abundance of mental energy to write about a topic I’m passionate about, but several hours later I got the sense that there must be more to it than that. Then I remembered: I’d had two bowls of Honey Nut Cheerios before heading to bed. What a mistake that was.

On the upside, it has helped me to remember exactly how powerful an effect eating right has on your mental and physical energy levels. Those 200-odd grain calories have powered me through an entire night, sparked some of the best ideas I’ve had in weeks, and powered me through some 2,500 words of writing in just the last three hours. If it seems incredible, it’s not. It’s well within human capacity to accomplish something this small; the only real energy I’m using is letting my fingers fly across the keyboard. It’s no wonder I’m burning the energy so slowly; other people can run 26.2 miles in three hours.

Keep in mind how powerful a healthy meal or snack is when you’re facing a hard day or staring slack-jawed at a computer screen. Then eat one, just in case the memory isn’t enough.

And since it’s a wonderful Memoial Day off for many of you, take some of that energy and get outdoors!  Don’t spend a day off just looking at a different screen than you do usually – what good is that?
